A new club has hit Norwood High School. Helping Hands is a program where students take part in outside-of-school activities to benefit the community and society as a whole.
Advisor Rebecca Newman is a Norwood High School history teacher. Ms. Newman spends her after-school days taking part in running snack booths and ticket tables at many sports events, which makes sense for why she would want to advise this club in particular
“I want to just make this have meaningful opportunities for service to give back to the school and the community. This is something we are very passionate about, and I just hope people will find value out of what we are doing,” she said.
“When Gabi and Camryn approached me, they had so many good ideas, and you could tell they were so passionate about becoming an organization that would not just help the school but also the town of Norwood.”

The founders of Helping Hands are two Norwood High School sophomores, Camryn Cataldo and Gabriella Volpp. Cataldo, in the past two years, has played field hockey and tennis while being a huge part of the drama program. She is in Fest, which is a class where students write and perform their own plays and compete with other nearby schools.
Volpp is a tennis player who is very dedicated to the clubs she takes part in, academics, and the school community. Both of them are extremely determined and have a lot coming for this club
“We have been planning this club since the end of last year because we saw so many students that were struggling to find service opportunities. We know that a lot of programs at this school require service hours, and we wanted to help people with that, but also the community as well,” said Volpp.
Cataldo wanted to take part in Helping Hands because “it is like a two-way street. It helps the school and the town of Norwood, and to be honest, there is nothing better than one: getting your service hours done, but also helping out the people around you.”
