FIFA has shocked the world, and not in a good way, with its ticket prices for the upcoming World Cup in North America. The drastic increase in prices has sparked global controversy as these prices make coming to the tournament nearly impossible for most fans, especially those planning to travel to North America for the World Cup.
With some tickets to the 2026 opening match costing more than the 2022 finals, these are easily the most expensive tickets in World Cup history. Category 1 tickets to this year’s opening match are averaging $2,735, while the Category 1 tickets to the last World Cup final averaged $1,607.
“The World Cup tickets are outrageously expensive, and I think it’s just pure blasphemy, how the highest seat in Gillette Stadium costs $900, and the average American family can’t afford that expensive of a ticket,” said Freshman Sarvesh Selvaraj.
This year’s World Cup is bringing games to Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, and the stadium is set to hold five group stage matches, one round of 32 match, and one quarterfinal match. The least expensive ticket to a group stage game is $651 to Norway vs. Iraq in the nosebleeds, which is the highest section of the stadium, and most tickets with better seating cost thousands of dollars, even to group stage matches.
Because of the criticism FIFA received for this, they were forced to begin offering some $60 tickets to group stage games. However, to purchase these tickets, fans must show proof of being long-time supporters of their team, even on road games. This means that the World Cup is still inaccessible to most football fans.

“I want to blame FIFA itself because of how they’ve changed the game of football,” said Selvaraj.
Never before have World Cup tickets been this outrageously priced to where most families have no way to go. This will absolutely destroy the atmosphere of what is the largest, most uniting, tournament in the world, because only the extremely rich who don’t care about the game can go. The U.S. already doesn’t have a strong football culture compared to other nations, and now because of these ticket prices FIFA has taken away the ability to go to games from the few fans who actually care. This is going to have a major impact on a tournament that should only be celebrated, praised, and should never raise any type of controversy, especially for something as outlandish as this.
“I don’t think it’ll feel the same in the stadium or watching the game because in the 2022 World Cup all the stadium was filled up,” said freshman Tomas Romero.
FIFA received even more criticism when it was discovered that the hosting nations pledged eight years ago to sell hundreds of thousands of $21 dollar tickets to group stage matches, and not one ticket is available for purchase at $21. FIFA and the hosting nations going back on their word outraged fans globally.
With the World Cup ticket prices as extreme as they are, it is clear that FIFA needs to remember what it is for. To unite people all over the world with the beautiful game that is football, and not to exploit people for their money. FIFA needs to go back to how it was years ago, when regular people could actually go to games and enjoy them without having to spend thousands of dollars just to watch a football match in person.
