Fast Fashion is turning closets into revolving doors and the planet into a dumping ground. New trends are dropping faster than they can break down, leaving behind heaps of waste. The “buy now, wear once” culture might seem like a fashion statement, but the earth is paying the cost.
The trend of fast fashion has skyrocketed in the past few years, when it comes to brands like Shein, Forever 21, H&M, Zara, and many more, based on their low prices and overall convenience. The fast fashion market has rapidly increased from $91 billion in 2021 to $167 billion in 2026, planning to continue to grow to $184 billion by 2027, based on statistics by Uniform Market.
10% of Earth’s carbon footprint is caused by the effects of these cheap textiles from fast fashion. Beyond carbon emissions, fast fashion also places huge pressure on water sources. The production of clothing requires billions of gallons of water.
Factories often dump untreated dyes and chemicals into nearby rivers, polluting water sources. As a result, ecosystems are damaged, and clean drinking water becomes harder to access in already vulnerable regions.
Fast fashion is designed around speed and constant change. The rapid production comes at a cost to keep up, which leads to clothing being made with cheaper materials. These items are not designed to last, which leads them to be thrown away, leaving a big impact.
Aside from the damage fast fashion industries cause to the planet, the labor behind it all is another major issue. The clothing for these companies is sold at extremely low prices and is made in large factories where the workers are overworked yet very underpaid.
In certain countries where these industries are more predominant, adults and even kids are working long hours in unsafe conditions, leading to a risk of injury and sickness due to a lack of ventilation and precautions taken overall.
“This week was Earth Week at NHS, and it focused on fun eco-friendly alternatives, including avoiding fast fashion said sophomore Maia D’annunzio, member of the Environmental Youth Coalition
In the end, fast fashion is not just about cheap and trendy clothes; it has serious effects on the environment. Even though fast fashion is convenient, the damage it causes is too important to ignore. By making better choices like buying clothes that are made from recyclable materials or not buying from fast fashion companies, a little step in the right direction can save the Earth.
