Manchester United is a team that fell from glory. Once dominant, now getting dominated. Manchester United vs. Liverpool on October 19 at Anfield was a match that nobody expected Manchester United to win, especially considering the fact that Liverpool was last season’s champions of the Premier League.
The match started with Bryan Mbuemo, Manchester United’s new signing, scoring a very quick goal in the 1st minute of the game to take a 1-0 lead over Liverpool, something very unexpected.
After this goal, Liverpool would start to create many chances, including Cody Gakpo hitting the post, but leading to no score. Manchester United would just about survive to keep their slim 1-0 lead.
More chances would start to come for both teams, but both would fail to score and it would still be a 1-0 lead for Manchester United
In minute 78, a brilliant pass from Federico Chiesa to Cody Gakpo would finally give Liverpool the equalizer that they were looking for since going 1-0 down.
Liverpool celebrated, not knowing what would come for them next. In the 84th minute, a cross from Manchester United’s captain, Bruno Fernandez would cross the ball into the box and Harry Maguire would be the first person to attack it to make it 2-1 in only a matter of minutes.
Liverpool would become desperate to win this game and would try to create more chances to score, but it would all be in vain. As the referee blew the whistle, Manchester United walked home with all three points while Liverpool walked away with none. Final score: 2-1.
“Liverpool weren’t great and they let Manchester United get way too many chances, I couldn’t believe what I saw,” said Farbentz Vixamaar, a student at Norwood High School who is a fan of Real Madrid.
“I think they just lost their way, they just went for managers who didn’t really fit, ex-players like Ole Gunnar Solskjær, who just wasn’t ready, on the sidelines you also had ex-players giving their opinions like Roy Keane and Paul Scholes and I don’t think that really helped” said English teacher James Lee, who is a fan of West Bromwich Albion.
“I think Liverpool aren’t the same team they were last season. Liverpool had such an incredible last season they couldn’t live up to that and I think Manchester United players realized that they weren’t the great Liverpool from last year and that they had a chance so they believed in themselves I think that more than anything, the players believed in themselves they were confident in their ability and the system they’re playing in anything is possible,” Lee said.
“Before, United players played for themselves,” said James Lee. “Now, United players are starting to play with identity. I hate to say it, but things might be starting to look up for Manchester United.”
