Typically, when one thinks of exercise, things like running, weight lifting, or strength training will come to mind. Most people rarely seem to realize that swimming is also a form of exercise, a great one at that, but it is often overlooked.
There is no question that teenagers nowadays are highly likely to suffer from some sort of mental disorder due to social media and many other factors. And one notable advantage of swimming is that it has been found to greatly improve mental health. More specifically, it can aid in improving overall mood and anxiety. For this reason, swimming is an amazing option for young teens! I know that when I was swimming daily, my mood was high and my stress levels were the lowest they have ever been. Not only does swimming have mental benefits, but it also increases physical fitness. Since swimming involves moving your entire body, it increases blood circulation, resulting in an improvement in cardiovascular health, and everyone knows a good heart means good health. Another thing worth adding is that swimming can help you maintain a healthy weight and can overall put you in better shape. Now that might not be a high concern to everyone, but it is certainly a plus! (Swimming – health benefits)
If swimming doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, then there are some very simple ways to make it even more fun! One of the easiest ways to bring more life to swimming is by bringing a friend along. Friends can shine light on any activity, and there is nothing more fun than playing Marco Polo for hours on end.
A question you may ask yourself is, “Where could I swim if I don’t own a pool?” Well, I’m glad you asked! If your town, or in this case Norwood, has a public pool, then you can purchase a day pass, or if you’ll be going regularly, it is worth buying a pass for the whole summer. If it just so happens that your town does not have a public pool, then you could go to a gym that has one, like the YMCA. However, that option could be more pricey since you’d most likely have to purchase a membership. I personally prefer to go to the Vanderbilt club since it’s indoors and can be used all year round. Here are some resources to help you find a pool and the information about them: Hawes Pool, Dedham Pool, Map of Swimming Spots near Norwood
If you do choose to pick up swimming as a hobby or as a sport, it’ll be important to remember that you must fuel your body properly and get good rest to be in peak condition. If you do not eat enough nutrients, or drink enough water, or even if you don’t get enough electrolytes replenished, then it will begin taking a toll on your body. Vitamin waters are delicious and are also a great way to get your electrolytes back. You can either get them with sugar or without, but they taste great either way.
Swimming is an extremely beneficial sport or hobby that is also relaxing and enjoyable. You can go with friends, family, and even pets if they’re trained. Just keep in mind to stay healthy and hydrated, as swimming can be exhausting for your body if you don’t care for yourself properly. If you are passionate about swimming, then I HIGHLY recommend joining Norwood High School’s winter swim team or the Norwood Stingrays over summer break. Thanks for diving into this read, and have a great swim!
