“They (the team of doctors) said it was an avulsion fracture … and a slight sprain in the bottom part of my ankle. In one part I also have a distal fibula fracture. “ said Pinnick after falling to the ground at the beginning of the girl’s varsity game on January 7.
Freshman Nicayla Pinnick was the team’s starting point guard averaging about 4 points a game, being a huge help on defense, and holding strong in rebounds. Freshman Ellen Baranowski filled into her starting spot, shifting player positions while Nicayla is healing.
Pinnick said, “I am out about 6 to 8 weeks. Getting the cast off in 2 weeks then will be put back into the boot.”
“Nikki is a natural playmaker… she is such a talented point guard that can really direct everybody else on the court and being only a freshman the way that she can see the game, you would never know she was only a freshman,” said girl’s Head Coach Kristen McDonnell with other continuing factors that lead to her success in the game. “She is such a good passer and her defense… I mean she was guarding the toughest kid on the other team” were other key factors added.
While in her recovery process, Nikki has been seen acting as an assistant coach and working with other injured players at the time coaching and making decisions on plays that can be run. Also when in games like times after half time she would be feeding in her thoughts and ideas on how to come out on top.
The team’s main goal is to continue getting better in every game and practice and with the consistent help from Nikki and the rest of the Girl’s varsity team they are quickly working towards that goal and showing their improvements every day.
Nikki is excited to get into physical therapy once out of the cast this Friday. Her goal is to push herself enough in recovery so that she is back before the end of the season. She will be working with local Norwood doctors and trainers “to come back stronger than ever”.

Catch the girls in their next games as they head to their upcoming tournament and keep an eye out for Nikki who will be nudging her team and coaches to keep pushing and get that victory.
