After four challenging years without a victory, the NHS boys varsity soccer team finally ended their losing streak with a thrilling win on October 3.
The Mustangs finally felt a sense of relief after their 2-0 win against Bellingham.
The players, energized and determined, shared their thoughts on what this breakthrough means for the team.
“It feels like a sense of relief for us, now we feel a little more motivated and know that we can do it” Said Junior Captain, Brody Pacheco.
For years, the team faced a series of disappointing seasons, marked by close games, tough opponents, and frustrating results. Despite the setbacks, the players never lost hope. The win wasn’t just a relief, but a reward for their perseverance and dedication to the sport. The victory was hard-earned.
The players believe it wasn’t just a change in tactics, but a shift in mindset that made the difference. They approached this game with a renewed sense of belief in themselves, and that confidence showed on the field.
“We played together as a team, that’s all that matters,” said Sophomore Goalkeeper, Muna Mpundu.
The players credit their bond as a team for helping them get through the tougher moments. Through each loss, they found ways to lift each other up, staying motivated even when the odds were stacked against them.
That camaraderie, forged through difficult times, became the team’s backbone.
“It’s just like- people, you know, just talking, you know, saying like ‘we’re not gonna make it, we’re not getting that win’ you know,” said Senior Captain Pedro Santos.
Senior Captain Mateo Diaz continued, “Everyone wanted to win, we wanted- we were craving it, and now that we are craving it, we are going out for more.”
Thursday’s win didn’t come without its challenges. From intense practices to refining game strategies, every player contributed to the team’s success. Coaches made adjustments throughout the season, helping the team focus on their strengths while improving their weaknesses. The energy was different this time, as the team played with determination and a hunger to win that had been building for years.
