Victoria Beverly Walker, known professionally as PinkPantheress, has dominated the internet for the last few years with her music. Her unique vocals and production create a distinctive musical style that has captivated audiences around the world. With the release of her second studio album, “Fancy That,” she reached new heights of fame and quality in music.
Now she has released a deluxe version of said album titled “Fancy Some More?” and unfortunately, it does not stack up to her other music.
There are two main problems I have with this album, even before starting my first listen.
First, I do not like it when artists make multiple remixes of the same song for the deluxe version. Usually, the music takes a hit as the producers don’t have enough time to really focus on each song and fix all of the nitty-gritty details, and this album is no exception to the pattern.
And second, this album is just far too long; there are 31 songs (23 of which are new) on this album. That’s almost four times longer than the original album.
The Good:
One of the highlights of the album is “Stars + Yves.” The pair had already worked together on Yves’ song “Soap (feat. PinkPantheress)” from Yves’ second EP “Soft Error,” so when the tracklist for this album dropped and I saw Yves, I was ecstatic. Thankfully, they did not disappoint.
“Stars + Yves” changes “Stars” just enough that the two songs sound distinctly different, but not enough that the soul of the song is changed. Yves’s verse flows perfectly, and her vocal tone complements both Pink’s and the song’s instrumental.
“Stateside + Zara Larsson” is one of the only other good songs from this album. “Stateside” is already one of the best songs from “Fancy That?”, and this remix did not disappoint. Zara Larsson has been on a rise with songs like “Symphony” and “Midnight Sun” going viral on TikTok. Contrary to the “Stateside” remix with Kylie Minogue, Zara Larsson’s voice complements Pink’s perfectly. Larsson’s vocal performance is fantastic, and the new instrumental flows fantastically.
The Terrible and Unlistenable:
Oh, Anitta, your artistic suicide needs to be studied. “Illegal + Anitta” genuinely put me in a bad mood. I would rather be cooked alive in a brazen bull than listen to this song again.
2010s Anitta dominated Brazil and was releasing extremely high quality music left and right. She has fallen so far from that place she might as well rebrand as Icarus.
I have three serious problems with this song.
For some reason, Anitta’s verse is in Spanish. Anitta is Brazilian, her first language is Portuguese, and this song is originally English. There is absolutely no reason that this verse should’ve been in Spanish.
On top of all of this, the beat changes into a corny trap beat for part of the song, making something that already wasn’t incredible to something even worse.
If you thought it couldn’t get worse, you’re wrong. It no longer feels like a PinkPantheress track because whoever remixed this song decided to relegate Pink’s vocals to only being backing for Anitta’s ill-fitting delivery.
An unfortunate, although expected, chop.
On the other hand, I very surprisingly ended up hating “Stateside + Kylie Minogue.” This song’s main problem isn’t anyone’s fault, but the song is still bad. Minogue’s and Pink’s voices do not mesh well at all. Kylie Minogue’s vocals are powerful and soulful, while Pink’s are soft and delicate. Their tones clash horribly, and despite good performances from both, it makes the song awkward.
If that wasn’t enough of a problem, Minogue’s vocals are mixed horribly.
An unexpected and extremely unfortunate chop.
The rest of the songs on this album have similar problems, and it really takes away from the enjoyment that this album could’ve had. PinkPantheress is a fantastic artist with or without features, and this album only reinforced that idea. I loved “Fancy That?” and this album was a massive disappointment, especially because it featured so many artists I wanted to see PinkPantheress collaborate with.
Overall, this album is a 4/10. It has too many serious problems that cannot be overlooked. The mixing is inconsistent and quite low-quality. Despite the problems, it has some very high highs and they make up for the oddness of the other songs.
