It’s been nearly a decade since Dr. Hugh Galligan first took the reins as principal of Norwood High School, and now, he takes his leave, but not from the District.
After seven years with Norwood High School, Dr. Galligan has been offered a new position within the district as Director of Safety, Communications, and Compliance. With his departure, he reflected on some of the hardest challenges and best moments he had at Norwood High School.
Thinking back to his best experiences, Dr. Galligan didn’t mention any recognition for himself.
“The little moments mean so much to me,” he said.
Dr. Galligan was incredibly successful in his tenure at NHS, and in 2022, he was honored with the Massachusetts Principal of the Year Award.
Instead of taking credit, Dr. Galligan gave credit to everyone but himself.
“That really was just a testament to the hard work of the Norwood High School community,” he said.

But as we all know, being the Principal of a high school is no easy task, and it got even harder when the COVID pandemic struck.
“Navigating increased students’ needs over the past few years in particular and trying to figure out creative ways as a staff and community to meet those needs has been a challenge,” said Galligan.
Galligan also touched on his feelings towards the community and how Norwood High School has been his home for the past seven years.
“It means so much to be able to stay in the community that I love,” he said.
Galligan’s departure opened up the position of Principal at NHS, and the committee chose none other than the current Associate Principal: Mrs. Cindy Derrane. The contract is set to be signed on July 1, 2025. From that point on, she is the principal of Norwood High School.
A Personal Note:
We thank Dr. Galligan for his dedication and hard work over the past seven years. He has contributed greatly to the community. As a current Senior, I’m grateful that he was my Principal for all four years; he has been a role model and embodies what you need in a Principal. Thank you, Dr. G.
