As the newly elected freshman officers start their first year of leading and participating in the Student Council, they shared what inspired them to lead and what their intentions are for the upcoming year.
Secretary Shealyn Coyle hopes to make a difference.
“I was really motivated to run because I wanted to feel that I made an impact on our class and do it through sharing ideas,” Coyle said.
Fine Arts Advisor Gigi Lundin was inspired to run for her position.
“It (Fine Arts) has been a really big part of my life, and I really wanted to get involved, and help make a difference in the Fine Art Department,” she said.
Many officers want to create an inclusive and safe environment for their fellow classmates.
“I am hoping to add fundraisers for more activities this year and when we do fundraisers they will be something students want to participate in,” Treasurer Lia Fruci, said.
“I want the class of 2028 to have the best experience for their first year of high school… I want them to feel that they can collaborate and work together during the fundraiser we put together, ” Vice President, Angelina Giovangelo said.
“ I want to make a great freshman environment for all students in athletics, and in general,” said Boy’s Athletic Advisor, Michael Thornton.
“ I want to provide opportunities for the sports here at Norwood High School for our grade. And embrace money for our class to have more events and opportunities,” said girls’s Athletics Advisor, Aly O’Neil.
The members met Thursday, Oct. 10 for their first meeting run by President Dante Rojas Maldonado to begin brainstorming what they are hoping to provide for the Freshman Class. They already have a bunch of ideas ready to publicize with the rest of the students in late October.
After jumping into the position of the senior class student council advisor at the end of their year last June, Kristin McDonnell was pumped to be given this role for this year’s Freshman class. She had heard from past teachers that this group was filled with an extensive amount of positive traits and ideas that were set for the new school.
“ … I felt like I was able to be more a part of the school environment and help to continue to build our great culture and community here. And so knowing that we had a really great class coming up, when I had spoken to the Middle School counselors, they had said that this Freshman class was packed with a lot of all-stars. So I thought it would be great to jump in again with this new class,” said McDonnell.
The process of choosing these officers was long and asked a lot from the students who ran, but all elected for this school year are ready to make a difference in their school community for the class of 2028, and are excited to get started on anything they may have planned for the year.
